Deadlines and penalties
The online filing deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year, and any tax you owe is due on the same date. HMRC charges an automatic penalty for filing late, with further penalties the longer a return stays outstanding, and tax paid late attracts interest. You usually need to file if you were self-employed as a sole trader, a partner in a business, a landlord with rental income, or had other untaxed income such as savings, investments or foreign income. Higher earners and anyone liable for the High Income Child Benefit Charge may also need to file. If you're not sure whether it applies to you, ask us and we'll check.
