Music Industry
Accountant for the music industry
Self Assessment, bookkeeping and tax for the music industry: musicians, touring professionals and session players. Set fee, wherever you are in the UK.
Musicians don't fit the standard sole-trader mould. Income comes from everywhere: live gigs, session work, royalties, streaming, teaching, merchandise. Allowable expenses aren't always obvious. KP Accountants has a strong music industry client base, built up on the road, and understands how the industry actually works.
You don't need to be in Cornwall. We handle everything over email, with a call when it's easier to talk.

FAQs
Yes. If you earn self-employed income from music — gigs, session work, royalties, teaching, merchandise — you must register as self-employed and file a Self Assessment return each year. HMRC charges penalties for late filing and late payment, so it's worth getting the structure right from the start.
Musicians can claim a wide range of legitimate expenses: instruments and accessories, PA and recording equipment, rehearsal space, travel and accommodation on tour, subscriptions to professional organisations, home studio costs, and the business proportion of phone bills. KP Accountants knows the music industry and will make sure nothing claimable gets missed.
MTD for Income Tax applies to sole traders — including musicians — whose qualifying income exceeds £50,000 from April 2026, dropping to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. Above those thresholds, you need MTD-compatible software and must send quarterly updates to HMRC. These thresholds and dates are set by HMRC and can change, so we keep clients up to date. KP Accountants can set this up and handle the submissions.
